Place : Berlin , Germany

Number of Participants from DNB: 4

School of Freedom – Program explanation

The School of Freedom’ is a method developed in the Loesje network, to organize activities in a group in a way that enables exchange of knowledge and skills. It inspires by exchange of practices and strengthens the capabilities and self-confidence of the participants as well as share responsibilities between them. Here everyone is a participant and everyone is a workshop giver! This means that each participant can suggest, as well as wish for workshops, lectures and other activities. As far as ideas go, the sky is the limit - and why even the sky? You don’t have to be an expert on a topic to lead a workshop about it; you can try out new things or join others and prepare something you are curios about. The method has been used since the 1990'ies at the yearly Loesje Summer Camps.

Participants can wish for some types of activities, themes and so on, that they would like to learn, this way other participants who are also interested could join them and others might be able to offer a workshop on that topic.

Based on the wishes and offers, a program will be made by a smaller group. The small group will balance the active and more passive workshops, workshop givers and the variety of topics. They also make sure that there is a balance among the workshop givers and how many workshops each person is giving. During the four days (4, 5, 7, 8) in each slot (morning and afternoon) there will be three workshops happening simultaneously. The participants will be able to choose based on their interest and type of activity, where they would like to take part. Each participant therefore either gives or takes part in two different workshops per day. Workshops 1, 2, 3.

Examples of workshops: felting, the history of plastic, theater, the history of Loesje, stop-motion film making, arts and music for active participation in civil society, the history of Israel-Palestine and the background to the conflict, local herbs and plants, gender inequality and how it affects your personal life, Japanese, Arabic, belly dancing, swimming, meditation... The possibilities are endless.

Loesje creative text writing- Loesje groups all around the world write and spread posters signed by the girl Loesje, with one-liners about everything that happens in society. Loesje texts are mostly positive and funny, and at the same time critical, wanting to stimulate the viewers to see things from new perspectives, and take action in their own lives. Loesje texts are not trying to tell you what to think; instead they often invite to many different interpretations. Anyone is welcome to join making the posters in text writing workshops. You don’t have to subscribe to any particular opinions, but the activities are based on a humanistic value base, which means believing in the power of and solidarity between people, and refrain from social exclusion. The key values of Loesje are: Showing solidarity, being Anti-authoritarian, being Sexually free,Showing Initiative, being Decisive, being A-religious and being Independent. The training is composed of Loesje groups from the EU, European countries, neigbhouring countries, and MEDA-countries. It is an important opportunity for them to get together physically and practice Loesje together.

We will also make a Film of Freedom, where the participants film themselves and through that document the School of Freedom and process of the project. Filming will also function as a reflection and evaluation of the method and the training.

The participants will during the training produce a Daily A4 (daily newspaper) a method/workshops handbook as documentation/evaluation. The Daily A4 contains updates about what has been going on the last day, but also works as a strong team-building tool. It also contains quotes and rumors about what is going on at the training, and is normally the most popular and cherished piece of the day.
